Giving Back from the Helm: How Charter Captains Are Making an Impact Beyond the Dock

By Connor MacLeod, Portsmouth, RI

The Meaning of Being a Charter Captain

Running Tall Tailz Charters has taught me that being a charter captain is about more than just catching fish. It is about creating experiences, building memories, and connecting with people in meaningful ways. Over the years, I have realized that the ocean gives so much, and part of being a captain is finding ways to give back to the community that supports you.

For me, giving back started in a very personal way. In 2014, I lost a close friend, Dennis Fitzgerald, to an overdose. His passing had a profound impact on me, and it inspired me to start the Dennis Fitz Foundation. The foundation focuses on raising awareness about addiction and supporting prevention efforts. It was my first step in using my position as a captain to make a positive difference beyond the dock.

Donating Charters to Support Causes

One of the most rewarding ways we give back at Tall Tailz Charters is by donating trips to local charities and fundraising events. Each year, we provide six to seven charters for different causes. These trips help organizations raise money and awareness, while giving people a chance to experience the ocean in a unique and exciting way.

For example, we have worked with groups that support youth development, veterans, and local community programs. Seeing the joy on people’s faces as they experience fishing for the first time is one of the most fulfilling parts of what we do. It reminds me that the impact of a charter is not just in the fish caught but in the connections and memories created along the way.

Bringing Foster Kids to the Water

Another program that is very close to my heart is taking groups of foster boys out on the water at no charge. Many of these kids have had difficult experiences in their young lives, and spending a day on a boat can be both fun and therapeutic. Fishing teaches patience, focus, and resilience, and it allows them to enjoy something positive that they might not otherwise experience.

At Tall Tailz Charters, we make sure that each trip is safe, educational, and memorable. We talk about the fish, the ocean, and the importance of respecting nature. These experiences often leave a lasting impression on the kids, and they give me a sense of purpose that goes far beyond running a business.

Community Involvement and Leadership

Being a charter captain also means taking on a leadership role in the community. Whether it is mentoring young anglers, speaking at local events, or supporting community initiatives, captains have a platform to make a difference. Over the years, I have tried to use my position to promote responsible fishing, safety on the water, and environmental awareness.

At Tall Tailz Charters, we emphasize conservation and sustainable practices. We educate our guests on catch limits, proper handling techniques, and the importance of preserving Rhode Island’s marine ecosystem. By promoting these values, we hope to inspire the next generation of anglers to care for the ocean while enjoying it responsibly.

Personal Fulfillment Through Giving Back

Giving back from the helm is rewarding in ways that go beyond recognition or publicity. For me, the real satisfaction comes from seeing the positive impact on people’s lives. Whether it is a child learning to fish for the first time, a group raising funds for a good cause, or guests gaining a deeper appreciation for the ocean, these moments make the hard work of running a charter worthwhile.

It also helps build a stronger sense of community. Fishing is often thought of as a solitary or competitive sport, but when combined with giving back, it becomes a way to bring people together. It fosters relationships, trust, and shared experiences that strengthen our connection to the ocean and to each other.

Inspiring Other Captains

I believe that giving back should be a standard part of being a charter captain. Many of us have the skills, equipment, and access to the water that can be used to help others. By donating charters, mentoring youth, or supporting local initiatives, captains can make a meaningful difference in their communities.

At Tall Tailz Charters, we strive to lead by example. We want to show that success on the water is not just about personal achievement but also about using your position to make a positive impact. The ocean has given us so much, and it is our responsibility to give back in return.

The Bigger Picture

Giving back from the helm is about more than one charity or one group of kids. It is about creating a culture of generosity, responsibility, and care for the community. At Tall Tailz Charters, every donated trip, every mentoring moment, and every educational opportunity is a part of that mission.

Ultimately, the goal is to inspire others to think beyond themselves and consider how their skills and resources can benefit those around them. Whether you are a charter captain, an angler, or someone with a passion for the ocean, there are always ways to make a difference.

Conclusion

Running Tall Tailz Charters has taught me that being a captain comes with responsibilities that extend beyond the water. Giving back, whether through charitable donations, mentoring foster kids, or promoting conservation, is a core part of what we do. The ocean has given me a life filled with adventure, purpose, and connection, and it is my privilege to share that gift with others.

By combining the thrill of fishing with the satisfaction of helping others, Tall Tailz Charters demonstrates that modern charter captains can make a lasting impact beyond the dock. These experiences remind us that success is measured not only by the fish we catch but by the lives we touch and the community we help build.
