The Thrill of Tautog Fishing

Fishing has been a lifelong passion for me, and running Tall Tailz Charters in Newport, Rhode Island allows me to share that passion with others. Tautog are one of the most exciting and challenging fish to target in the Northeast. These fish are strong, smart, and notoriously stubborn. Catching a trophy tautog requires patience, skill, and preparation. Over the years, Tall Tailz Charters has earned a reputation for helping clients land some of the largest tautog in Rhode Island, including two state record fish in 2021 and 2025.

For me, it is about more than just breaking records. It is about creating experiences that are memorable, educational, and thrilling for every angler who steps aboard. Every trip is an opportunity to teach, guide, and share the joy of fishing.

The Secret Is in the Bait

One of the key elements behind our success is bait. Tautog are crustacean eaters, and their favorite is the locally caught white crab, also known as a sand crab. These crabs are small, fresh, and natural, making them irresistible to tautog.

I make it a point to trap these crabs myself. Local bait shops rarely carry them, and using anything less than premium bait can significantly reduce the chances of landing a trophy fish. By preparing our own bait, I ensure that every trip is set up for success. Both the 21.57-pound tautog caught in 2021 and the 23.94-pound tautog caught in 2025 were taken on white crabs, demonstrating how critical this small detail can be.

Expert Techniques Make the Difference

Using the right bait is only one part of the equation. Technique is just as important when targeting tautog. These fish spend most of their time near rocks, reefs, and other underwater structures. Knowing how to present the bait naturally, when to let it sit, and how to read the fish’s behavior can mean the difference between a successful catch and a missed opportunity.

I teach all of my clients the proper way to drop lines, set hooks, and handle the fish once it is caught. Tautog can be stubborn, so patience is key. Understanding the fish’s behavior and adjusting techniques on the fly allows even first-time anglers to experience success on the water.

Timing and Location Are Critical

Newport, Rhode Island, is known as the Holy Grail for tautog fishing in the Northeast. The rocky bottoms and structured reefs provide the perfect habitat for these fish. Over years of fishing these waters, I have mapped the areas where tautog are most likely to be feeding and learned the best times to target them.

Tautog are especially active during the spring and fall. During these seasons, I run numerous trips, sometimes fishing for 30 to 40 consecutive days before a weather cancellation allows a break. This schedule is demanding, but it ensures that our clients have the best opportunity to land big fish. By combining location, timing, and technique, Tall Tailz Charters consistently delivers record-breaking results.

Creating a Full Experience for Clients

A successful charter is about more than just catching fish. It is about creating a full experience for our clients. From the moment they step aboard, I focus on safety, education, and engagement. Guests learn how to tie knots, handle lines, and set hooks while gaining insight into the local waters and fish behavior.

Watching a client catch a large tautog is incredibly rewarding. Their excitement, combined with the knowledge they gain from the trip, creates memories that last long after they leave the boat. My goal is to make every trip both educational and fun, ensuring that every client leaves with a sense of accomplishment.

The Records Speak for Themselves

Tall Tailz Charters has had the honor of guiding clients to two Rhode Island state record tautog. In 2021, 17-year-old Paul Newman of New Jersey caught a 21.57-pound tautog measuring 33 inches long. That record stood for years until it was surpassed in 2024. Just one year later, on November 9, 2025, Vlad Vaynshteyn, another regular client, landed a 23.94-pound tautog measuring 33.5 inches long with a girth of 24.5 inches. Both fish took locally caught white crabs, showing that preparation, premium bait, and expert guidance make all the difference.

These accomplishments are exciting, but the true reward is helping clients experience the thrill of landing a big fish and learning skills they can use for a lifetime.

Hard Work Behind the Scenes

Running a successful charter business is demanding. Beyond the excitement of fishing, there is maintenance, preparation, and planning. On rare off days, I perform maintenance on the boat, check equipment, and ensure that everything is ready for the next trip. Every detail matters when it comes to safety, reliability, and the overall client experience.

This dedication to preparation ensures that every charter runs smoothly and that clients can focus on fishing, learning, and enjoying their time on the water.

Conclusion

From trapping white crabs to guiding clients to record-breaking tautog, every aspect of Tall Tailz Charters is designed to create unforgettable experiences. Premium bait, expert techniques, timing, and location all play a critical role in making our trips successful.

Catching a trophy tautog is thrilling, but the real reward is seeing clients enjoy the experience, learn new skills, and make lasting memories. Running Tall Tailz Charters has allowed me to combine my love for the water with a commitment to excellence, creating experiences that anglers will remember for a lifetime.

Whether it is a first-time angler or a seasoned fisherman, the combination of preparation, guidance, and premium bait gives everyone the best chance to land a big fish. At Tall Tailz Charters, we are not just catching tautog. We are creating moments, teaching skills, and sharing the joy of fishing in one of the best locations in the Northeast.

The Meaning of Being a Charter Captain

Running Tall Tailz Charters has taught me that being a charter captain is about more than just catching fish. It is about creating experiences, building memories, and connecting with people in meaningful ways. Over the years, I have realized that the ocean gives so much, and part of being a captain is finding ways to give back to the community that supports you.

For me, giving back started in a very personal way. In 2014, I lost a close friend, Dennis Fitzgerald, to an overdose. His passing had a profound impact on me, and it inspired me to start the Dennis Fitz Foundation. The foundation focuses on raising awareness about addiction and supporting prevention efforts. It was my first step in using my position as a captain to make a positive difference beyond the dock.

Donating Charters to Support Causes

One of the most rewarding ways we give back at Tall Tailz Charters is by donating trips to local charities and fundraising events. Each year, we provide six to seven charters for different causes. These trips help organizations raise money and awareness, while giving people a chance to experience the ocean in a unique and exciting way.

For example, we have worked with groups that support youth development, veterans, and local community programs. Seeing the joy on people’s faces as they experience fishing for the first time is one of the most fulfilling parts of what we do. It reminds me that the impact of a charter is not just in the fish caught but in the connections and memories created along the way.

Bringing Foster Kids to the Water

Another program that is very close to my heart is taking groups of foster boys out on the water at no charge. Many of these kids have had difficult experiences in their young lives, and spending a day on a boat can be both fun and therapeutic. Fishing teaches patience, focus, and resilience, and it allows them to enjoy something positive that they might not otherwise experience.

At Tall Tailz Charters, we make sure that each trip is safe, educational, and memorable. We talk about the fish, the ocean, and the importance of respecting nature. These experiences often leave a lasting impression on the kids, and they give me a sense of purpose that goes far beyond running a business.

Community Involvement and Leadership

Being a charter captain also means taking on a leadership role in the community. Whether it is mentoring young anglers, speaking at local events, or supporting community initiatives, captains have a platform to make a difference. Over the years, I have tried to use my position to promote responsible fishing, safety on the water, and environmental awareness.

At Tall Tailz Charters, we emphasize conservation and sustainable practices. We educate our guests on catch limits, proper handling techniques, and the importance of preserving Rhode Island’s marine ecosystem. By promoting these values, we hope to inspire the next generation of anglers to care for the ocean while enjoying it responsibly.

Personal Fulfillment Through Giving Back

Giving back from the helm is rewarding in ways that go beyond recognition or publicity. For me, the real satisfaction comes from seeing the positive impact on people’s lives. Whether it is a child learning to fish for the first time, a group raising funds for a good cause, or guests gaining a deeper appreciation for the ocean, these moments make the hard work of running a charter worthwhile.

It also helps build a stronger sense of community. Fishing is often thought of as a solitary or competitive sport, but when combined with giving back, it becomes a way to bring people together. It fosters relationships, trust, and shared experiences that strengthen our connection to the ocean and to each other.

Inspiring Other Captains

I believe that giving back should be a standard part of being a charter captain. Many of us have the skills, equipment, and access to the water that can be used to help others. By donating charters, mentoring youth, or supporting local initiatives, captains can make a meaningful difference in their communities.

At Tall Tailz Charters, we strive to lead by example. We want to show that success on the water is not just about personal achievement but also about using your position to make a positive impact. The ocean has given us so much, and it is our responsibility to give back in return.

The Bigger Picture

Giving back from the helm is about more than one charity or one group of kids. It is about creating a culture of generosity, responsibility, and care for the community. At Tall Tailz Charters, every donated trip, every mentoring moment, and every educational opportunity is a part of that mission.

Ultimately, the goal is to inspire others to think beyond themselves and consider how their skills and resources can benefit those around them. Whether you are a charter captain, an angler, or someone with a passion for the ocean, there are always ways to make a difference.

Conclusion

Running Tall Tailz Charters has taught me that being a captain comes with responsibilities that extend beyond the water. Giving back, whether through charitable donations, mentoring foster kids, or promoting conservation, is a core part of what we do. The ocean has given me a life filled with adventure, purpose, and connection, and it is my privilege to share that gift with others.

By combining the thrill of fishing with the satisfaction of helping others, Tall Tailz Charters demonstrates that modern charter captains can make a lasting impact beyond the dock. These experiences remind us that success is measured not only by the fish we catch but by the lives we touch and the community we help build.

Growing Up with the Ocean

I grew up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, surrounded by salt air, hard working people, and a community that taught me the value of loyalty and grit. My parents were loving and supportive, and my siblings and friends shaped much of who I am today. The ocean was always a constant presence. It was something I respected from an early age, and it did not take long for me to realize that my life would revolve around it.

After high school I attended several maritime schools to earn the licenses and certifications I needed to build a career on the water. My first professional steps were in commercial fishing. I worked on offshore lobster boats and offshore gillnetters, often in rough conditions that tested both my body and my patience. Those early years taught me how to push through discomfort and stay focused when things got tough.

At the age of eighteen, I earned my one hundred ton master’s license. That achievement opened the door to new opportunities, and I began running several types of vessels. I captained rescue and tow boats, small passenger ferries, and the Newport harbormaster boat. Each role helped me gain experience, confidence, and an even deeper respect for the water.

Life on Tugboats and the Path to Something New

In 2014 I joined Reinauer Transportation as a second mate and PIC tankerman. Working on tugboats was an entirely different level of responsibility. The hours were long, the work was serious, and the environment demanded constant awareness. Tugboats taught me how to lead, how to stay calm under pressure, and how to operate safely in unpredictable situations.

As much as I valued the work, I also felt something pulling me toward a different path. I wanted a way to share my knowledge, my passion for fishing, and the joy that comes from being on the water. I wanted to build something of my own. During my time off from tugboats, I started Tall Tailz Charters in 2018 as a part time project. At the time, I had no idea how much it would grow or how much it would change my life.

The Birth of Tall Tailz Charters

Tall Tailz Charters began with a simple goal. I wanted to create memorable fishing experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. I wanted guests to feel the same excitement that I felt when landing a big fish or watching the sun rise over the Rhode Island shoreline.

From the very beginning, I focused on professionalism, honesty, and customer experience. I invested in quality gear. I spent countless hours scouting fishing locations and studying seasonal patterns. Most importantly, I treated every trip as an opportunity to teach, connect, and create lasting memories.

Word spread quickly. By 2024, I decided to retire from the tugboat world and run Tall Tailz Charters full time. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The charter business gave me a sense of freedom and fulfillment that I never had before.

Building a Reputation in Rhode Island’s Fishing Community

Today, Tall Tailz Charters is known for reliability, skill, and a personal touch. I take pride in creating a welcoming environment where guests feel comfortable, whether they are seasoned anglers or complete beginners.

One of the biggest moments in our history came in 2021 when we broke the Rhode Island state record tautog. The previous record had stood for seventy years. Catching a fish of that size brought a lot of attention to the business. In 2024 the record was broken again, but on November 9, 2025, Tall Tailz reclaimed the title for a second time. These achievements helped shape our reputation, but what matters more to me is the consistency and dedication behind them.

Tall Tailz is built on preparation, knowledge, and passion. Every trip is planned with the guest in mind. Every effort is made to ensure safety and quality. Over time, these values have helped me build one of the most respected charter experiences in the region.

A Captain’s Commitment to Community

Tall Tailz Charters is not only about fishing. It is also about giving back. In 2014 I created the Dennis Fitz Foundation in honor of my close friend who passed away from addiction. The foundation raises funds for addiction awareness and prevention, and supporting this cause remains deeply important to me.

Each year I donate several charters to local charities and fundraisers. I also take multiple groups of foster boys fishing at no charge. Watching these kids experience the ocean, sometimes for the first time, is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

Looking Ahead

Building Tall Tailz Charters has been a journey shaped by hard work, community, and a love for the sea. I went from commercial fishing to tugboats to running a charter business that continues to grow every year. The best part is that I get to share all of it with the people who step onto my boat.

As I look ahead, my goal is simple. I want to continue providing one of Rhode Island’s most trusted and memorable fishing experiences. The ocean has given me a life I am proud of, and Tall Tailz Charters allows me to share that gift with others every single day.

Finding My Way from Commercial Decks to Charter Freedom

When I look back at the path that brought me from commercial fishing and tugboats to running Tall Tailz Charters full time, I see a journey shaped by long days, unpredictable seas, and a deep respect for the water. I grew up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and the ocean was part of my life from an early age. My early years as a commercial fisherman taught me discipline and endurance. Working on offshore lobster boats and gillnetters was not glamorous work. It was physical and exhausting, but it helped me build the foundation I rely on today.

At eighteen I earned my one hundred ton master’s license, which opened the door to new opportunities. I went on to run rescue and tow boats, passenger ferries, and the Newport Harbormaster boat. Later I joined Reinauer Transportation as a second mate and PIC tankerman. The tugboat lifestyle was demanding and sometimes lonely, but it taught me responsibility, leadership, and patience. Every shift, every tow, and every storm helped shape the captain I eventually became.

The Birth of Tall Tailz Charters

In 2018, during my off time from tugboats, I started Tall Tailz Charters as a part time venture. I wanted to share the excitement that fishing brought me and to create memorable experiences for people of all ages. What began as a small project quickly turned into something that gave me a renewed sense of purpose.

By 2024, I made the decision to retire from tugboats and run Tall Tailz Charters full time. The transition was life changing. Instead of hauling lines on a commercial vessel, I was helping families catch their first striped bass or watching seasoned anglers chase a personal best. I realized that for many modern captains like me, chartering is not just a career shift. It is a chance to build a lifestyle that blends freedom, passion, and community.

The Rise of the Modern Charter Captain

Today’s charter captains are a different breed compared to past generations. Many of us come from commercial or industrial maritime backgrounds. We bring years of technical experience but choose a path that gives us more control over our days and a deeper connection with the people we serve.

Modern charter captains are mentors, entertainers, and teachers. We balance safety with adventure. We operate as business owners, content creators, customer service professionals, and conservation advocates. Running a charter operation is no longer only about catching fish. It is about delivering a full experience that guests remember for years.

Technology also plays a major role. Advanced sonar, mapping systems, and high quality gear help us track fish more effectively than ever before. At the same time, nothing replaces traditional knowledge. Tide patterns, seasonal migrations, and instinct still matter. The best captains blend old school skill with new school tools.

Chasing Trophy Fish and Making Memories

One of the proudest moments of my career came in 2021 when Tall Tailz Charters broke the Rhode Island state record tautog. That record had not been broken in seventy years. It brought incredible attention to our business. Although the record was beaten in 2024, our team reclaimed it on November 9, 2025. These moments are more than accomplishments. They show what is possible when experience, preparation, and passion come together.

But the real joy is not only in the record catches. It is in the excitement on a child’s face when they hook into a big fish. It is in the quiet mornings when the sun rises over the Rhode Island coastline. It is in the friendships built on the deck of my boat. These experiences remind me why modern charter captains do what we do.

Giving Back Through the Water

For me, being a captain also means giving back. In 2014 I started the Dennis Fitz Foundation in honor of a close friend who passed away from addiction. The foundation supports addiction awareness and prevention, and the cause remains close to my heart.

Each year I donate several charters to local organizations and fundraisers. I also take groups of foster boys fishing at no charge. The ocean has given me so much, and sharing it with others feels like the right way to honor the opportunities I have been given.

Redefining Life on the Water

Life on the water has changed for modern captains. We are no longer defined only by the vessels we run or the fish we catch. We are defined by the experiences we create, the communities we support, and the passion we bring to every trip.

Leaving tugboats and entering the charter world gave me a new sense of freedom. It allowed me to build a career that reflects who I am and what I care about. Through Tall Tailz Charters, I get to live out my dream every day, and I hope that my journey inspires others to chase their own path on the water.
